My first preference is to save teeth when saving them is predictable and healthy. Sometimes, however, a tooth is too damaged, infected, loose, cracked, or poorly positioned to keep. In those situations, removing the tooth can protect the patient’s overall oral health.
Wisdom teeth are a common reason patients need an evaluation. They can become inflamed, partially trapped, difficult to clean, or damaging to nearby teeth.
Before recommending an extraction, I review the tooth, surrounding bone, medical history, symptoms, and replacement options when appropriate. Patients should understand what to expect during healing and when a referral is the safest path.
When a tooth other than a wisdom tooth is removed, we also talk about whether replacement is needed. Dental implants, bridges, and other options may help maintain function and prevent shifting.
If you have wisdom tooth pain or have been told a tooth cannot be saved, schedule an evaluation at Village Family Dental. We will explain your options clearly before treatment.
